Acquiring and exhibiting contemporary art has been a part of the museum's mission since its inception. The contemporary collection includes painting, sculpture, works on paper and mixed media. Critical trends in American art of the 1960s and 1970s, from Pop Art and Op Art to Minimalism and Photorealism, gained representation in the collection through key hard-edge, geometrical paintings by Richard Anuskiewicz and Al Held, sculptures of everyday objects by Claes Oldenburg, and meticulously rendered still lifes by Paul Wonner.
