“I’m standing on a rooftop looking out over London.” With these words Edward R. Murrow and the daring band of journalists he gathered made broadcast history during the Blitz. Murrow and the “boys” (which included one girl) literally created the field of broadcast journalism by bringing the story of WW II home to Americans. The Irondale Ensemble’s new devised theater piece uses the words and deeds of these intrepid reporters to investigate the questions: Is news important today, where do we get it and why should it matter? This is the Edward R. Murrow before “Goodnight and Good Luck” – before the historic showdown with Joseph McCarthy.
This is the story of Murrow, Shirer, Collingwood, Sevareid, Hottelet, Smith and others like them for whom the need to get intelligent information and analysis of world events was not just a career, it was an adventure.
“The speed of communications is wondrous to behold. It is also true that speed can multiply the distribution of information that we know to be untrue.” – Edward R. Murrow
This original work by the Irondale Ensemble explores the effectiveness and validity of communication methods today by telling a victorious story of the past. Not to be missed by anyone concerned about the ever changing face of media communications.
