Multi-faith Earth Day Pilgrimage to Burns Bog April 26, 2009

The third Multi-faith Pilgrimage to Burn’s Bog will happen on April 26. We meet at 2:00 pm at Quizno’s on Annacis Island (640 Chester Road) or at 3:15 pm at the Great Pacific Forum (10388 Nordel Court). Directions at www.greeningspirit.ca. Burns Bog is a huge ecological reserve ten times the size of Stanley Park, a massive carbon sink, and home to many endangered species. Although protected by a “Conservation Covenant” signed by four levels of government, it is threatened by the proposed South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) of the Pacific Gateway mega-project and is now internationally listed as an endangered bog. Burns Bog is a sacred site, an island of quiet in an urban delta, a miraculous (but threatened) survivor on the Pacific flyway.

A pilgrimage is a ritual that belongs to no single religious or cultural tradition. One simply must answer the call to go… it is a way to witness, to see something with "new eyes". Pilgrimage is sacred travel, an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.

We will celebrate Burns Bog, the Fraser River, and the 9,000 year old St. Mungo Archeological site with music, blessings and words, scallop shells, and all that people bring to share. This pilgrimage will engage hundreds of local citizens in a spiritual journey to the sacred ground of Burns Bog. All are welcome. More information at www.greeningspirit.ca
