Movies on the Fox: The Wizard of Oz August 2, 2007

Perhaps the most beloved movie of all time, The Wizard of Oz (1939) stars Judy Garland as Dorothy with Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr as her unforgettable traveling partners in a musical journey to the Emerald City in the Land of Oz.

L. Frank Baum’s classic book had been brought to the screen before this MGM classic and more versions have followed, but none have had the lasting impact of this movie. A technical marvel of its time, the opening Kansas sequence was filmed in sepia to provide greater contrast to the Technicolor splendor of Oz. The Kansas scenes may be a revelation to some viewers as annual color television broadcasts in the 60s showed the scenes incorrectly as black and white.

Winner of two Academy Awards for Herbert Stothart’s original score, and for best original song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg.
