Winner of four Academy Awards, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) is the first of what would become an Indiana Jones trilogy, starring Harrison Ford as professor/adventurer Dr. Indiana Jones. Raiders, director Steven Spielberg’s tribute to the Saturday matinee serials of his childhood, takes us on a thrilling journey across the globe from the jungles of South America, to a university campus in Chicago, a mysterious bar in Nepal, and to the Egyptian desert in one harrowing adventure after another.
The Lost Ark refers to the Old Testament Ark of the Covenant believed to contain the tablets on which are written the Ten Commandments. At its core, Raiders is a story about good vs. evil and in its 1930s setting there was no greater evil than Nazism. The Nazis believe they have found the hidden tomb containing the Ark. What could the Godless and soulless Nazis want with the Ark? Can Indiana beat them to it? While the end is never in doubt, getting there is exciting, fast paced, and popcorn eating fun – all the elements of a great movie for an evening under the stars
