Mosaic Dance Theater Company and The Temple of Jehan in conjunction with American Globe Theatre present “Tradition, Myth & Fantasy,” a unique evening of dance from the Near East. The production will be presented at American Globe Theatre (at St. Mary’s in Times Square), 145 W. 46th St., New York, NY 10036. Performances are at 7:00 PM on Thursday-Saturday, May 28-30, and at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 31. American Globe Theatre is not handicapped accessible.
Mosaic Dance Theater Company’s program features a Folkloric Dance of Upper Egypt and a contemporary, interpretive Near Eastern dance, both exciting new choreographies by Samara; a dance/story theater adaptation of an Arabian Nights’ tale, Ubar, The Lost City of Brass, adapted and directed by Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, and Mystique et Spirituelle, originally choreographed by the late Ibrahim Farrah for his world-renowned Near East Dance Group and re-staged for MDTC by Phaedra. The performers in the Mosaic company are: Samara, Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Adriana Rosa, Nina Brewton, Nahoko Sugiyama, and Romy Zamora, with Ayana Alexis, Najla Nikole, Derya Samawi, Audrey Werner and Special Guest Artists Phaedra and Mish Mish B’int Amira.
The Temple of Jehan features 17 creative dance artists expressing the passion and diversity of the enduring art known as "Bellydance". Ancient and futuristic visions of choreographer/composer Jehan, pioneer of theatrical bellydance, hope to inspire a deeper understanding of what motivates us to dance at all costs. Original music and collaboration with many amazing talents have brought forth all new choreographies which are infused with the passion, mystery and exoticism which is the allure of the East. Ancient mythologies of Pharaonic Egypt, fantastical creatures of Persia, magic rituals, goddess initiations of Medieval Europe and personal dramatic journeys through darkness and light are explored as Jehan "like a modern day Sheherazade" weaves her spell with a rich vocabulary of movement executed skillfully by a beautiful cast.
