Theater has become their inspiration; a reason to strive and overcome adversity. The film features their stories of how the arts enriches their lives amidst personal troubles, including poverty, violence, gangs, drugs, absentee parents, as well as the troubles and hardships of adolescence.
We are pleased to announce our 2012 Featured Artist, BiJian Fan of Camarillo. BiJian was born in Beijing, China. He learned paper folding and cutting from his grandmother. Today, BiJian still creates cutting-edge paper sculpture to carry on this tradition, in addition to other media including metal, polymer, wood, and other materials.
BiJian explores aesthetic and physical properties of various materials, integrates alternative sculptural techniques into his artistry, and transforms 2D static material into 3D kinetic sculptures. His kinetic sculptures interact with surrounding environment, energize the space, and represent an evolution in space and time.
BiJian studied in China, Japan, and the USA, and has earned his BS and MS in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He continues to expand his knowledge in material science and advance his spatial and temporal sense in sculpting. By day, he is a biotech engineer; by night, he sculpts at home in Camarillo, California.
BiJian has exhibited internationally and earned numerous awards. He exhibited in his
home town for 2008 Beijing Olympics. His artwork is featured in a McDonald's
advertisement. His local recognition includes the featured artist of 2009 Ventura
Artwalk and a public arts at Museum of Ventura County. BiJian art will be display at the Arts Foundation Office.
