As a film maker, Nair is passionate about exploring the issues that arise between cultures. During her visit to Columbia College Chicago, Nair will discuss her craft and the concepts in her films that break the barriers of racial, gender, and general stereotypes.

Born and raised in India, educated at Delhi University and at Harvard, she first began her career as an actress and quickly made the switch to directing documentaries. In the late 1980s Nair established herself as a talented director and has since directed, written, and produced such films as Mississippi Masala (1991), Monsoon Wedding (2001), Vanity Fair (2004), and Amelia (2009).
