The Monarch Butterfly is our only true migratory butterfly. The Monarch's journey begins in late August in the northern United States and Southern Canada and ends in South Central Mexico, in early November. The return trip begins in early March when they leave the sanctuaries in Mexico and returning to where its great-great-grandparent's journey began last fall. It takes several generations, starting in the gulf shore states before the butterfly's northern trek is completed. Researchers put tags on these Monarchs to determine where they originated. Join Denny Brooks for a Monarch Butterfly tagging event and help attempt to tag some migrating Monarch Butterflies. Denny will set up at the Lanigan Pavilion at the end of Homestead Road for this drop-in program. Butterfly nets will be provided to catch butterflies. In case of rain, the program will be rescheduled for Sunday, September 5.
