About the Molly Hatchet
Legendary Southern Rockers Molly Hatchet return to Houston June 18 for their 35TH Anniversary Tour and the Release Party of their 16th long-anticipated “Greatest Hits II: The South Has Risen Again” at the new live music venue Flamingo Room, performing classic hits like “Flirtin' With Disaster,” “Beating The Odds,” “Gator Country,” and “Whiskey Man,” just to name a few. When talking about a Southern Rock band, writers like to use the cliché “the South shall rise again,” but for over 30 years, this legendary outfit from Jacksonville Florida has been working hard, playing fast, living tough and delivering a brand of southern fury unparalleled by any other. With the release of “Greatest Hits II” on Sony/SPV Platinum Molly Hatchet proves that, for rock music fans, the South HAS risen again.
Southern Rock emerged in the early 1970's as a mixture of blues, country, gospel and the English invasion. The music was filled with style and emotion and bands in the fore-front included legends such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and a band from Jacksonville, Florida called Molly Hatchet, named after a famous 17th century axe murderess Hatchet Molly, who would behead her lovers with the hand tool Lizzy Borden made famous. Their unmistakable trade mark is the warrior who appears on their album sleeves and was designed by the American fantasy artist, Frank Frazetta.
In 1978, Molly Hatchet signed their first recording deal and sold almost a million copies of their self-titled debut release. They toured with Aerosmith and Bob Seeger that same year, and their second album release “Flirtin’ With Disaster” (1979) followed twelve months later. Their third album “Beatin’ The Odds” (1981) was a commercial success, selling over two million copies and entering the Billboard charts at no. 25. Their fourth offering, “Take No Prisoners” (1981), made it directly into the Billboard charts. Two years later, Molly Hatchet presented their exceptional “No Guts … No Glory” (including the anthem “Fall Of The Peacemakers”), followed in 1984 with “The Deed Is Done” and “Double Trouble Live” (1985), recorded in Dallas and Jacksonville.
Fans would wait four years for “Lightning Strikes Twice,” and then came an almost seven year sabbatical before “Devil’s Canyon” was released in 1996. “After all those years, it was still a great feeling to pick up a guitar, connect it to an amp and start playing,” veteran Bobby Ingram rejoiced at the successful comeback. They followed with “Silent Reign of Heroes” and the dynamic “Kingdom Of XII.” Comparing the two, Ingram says, “’Silent Reign of Heroes’ was not really a sinister album, but it did deal with the dark side of the band. ‘Kingdom Of XII’ was pure fun. It’s an album for beer drinkers, for people who enjoy hoisting the rebel flag again.” “Warriors Of The Rainbow Bridge” was released in 2005 in memory of Bobby Ingram’s late wife Stephanie, and last year saw their 16TH studio release, “Justice.” “Greatest Hits II” marks the 35th anniversary of this legendary rock band. In Ingram’s words, "So, as we roll on through our next 30 years of music & the road along with our dear fans (who walk beside us no matter what), I can guarantee that the southern rock fans around the world will grow and become stronger than ever before and keep developing the common bond and unity that keeps this style of music alive and well. Rest assured…Molly Hatchet is a band that is always working hard, playing fast, living tough and still FLIRTIN' WITH DISASTER!!!"
The Lineup
In 2006 guitarist Bobby Ingram celebrated his 20th Anniversary as lead guitarist of the Molly Hatchet band. Original Molly Hatchet/Danny Joe Brown Band keyboardist John Galvin remains in the lineup, as well as veteran singer Phil McCormack, who now has 11 years as the voice of Molly Hatchet. Co-founding Molly Hatchet member Dave Hlubek returned to the fold in December of 2004 and is enjoying his second stint with the band. Dave and Bobby blend together perfectly and both are enjoying recording and touring together with the 21st century Molly Hatchet lineup. Rounding out the band is the rock-solid rhythm section of the respected, seasoned bassist Tim Lindsey (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington Band) and 6th-year member Shawn Beamer, a powerhouse drummer from Daytona Beach whom his fans have nick-named "Thunder"!
