The Milwaukee Art Museum's extensive collections of modern American and European art reflect the museum's intense interest in European modernism during the first half of the 20th century. As early as 1914, just one year after the historic Armory Show in New York, the Milwaukee Art Society presented 'The Modern Spirit,' an exhibition that included works by Duchamp and Leger. MAM's collection of Modern art includes important works such as Leger's 'Study for Three Portraits,' Robert Henri's 'The Art Student' (Miss Josephine Nivison), George Bellows's 'The Sawdust Trail' and Ludwig Meidner's 'Portrait of a Young Man.'
