How do you currently deal with conflict: do you become angry or frustrated, do you shut down emotionally or hold back, or do you feel frightened or immobilized? Do you avoid confrontation at all costs, or find it lurking everywhere you turn? Are you frustrated that people don't see your side? Do you wish you had better tools to deal with conflict more effectively or would you like it to “just go away”? If you answered yes to any of these questions then CCC’s Foundations I: Mindful Conflict Resolution is for you!

In Foundations I: Mindful Conflict Resolution, we will learn and practice the basic techniques and mindset of Compassionate, Nonviolent Communication, including:

• Mind-body awareness and connection of sensations to our feelings and needs
• Distinguishing thoughts from feelings; naming our feelings
• Choosing needs, feelings and observations free of judgment
• Deep listening & empathy; what’s not empathy; reflection skills (listening for accuracy/shared understanding)
• Creating clear observations
• Making powerful requests
• Getting clear about our needs via gratitude

This course is facilitated by Shana Deane, who brings diverse experience and skills to her sharing of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), with a specialty in integrating body-mind practices. A graduate of the BayNVC North America Leadership Training Program, since 2005 she has completed over 600 hours of NVC training. She is a Certification Candidate at the international Center for Nonviolent Communication, holds a Graduate Certificate in Restorative Practices, and B.A. degrees from New York University and Hunter College.

“Already by my first week of taking the Foundations class, I started to notice small, heart-warming shifts in my daily conversations. I talk to a lot of people throughout my day, and yet suddenly each exchange became a chance to plug in on a richer, colorful, more meaningful level. I learned that when people say 'no', to think about what they might be saying yes to... what need this 'no' may serve for them. Meeting with the trainers and my fellow classmates was a treat that I looked forward to each week.”
