Mind Over Metal: Beasley Meadmore, Price and Tsutakawa June 19, 2008

Sculpturesite presents Mind Over Metal, an exhibition of the work of four nationally and internationally recognized sculptors who use steel and bronze to create dynamic abstract sculpture. The late Clement Meadmore, renowned Bay Area artist Bruce Beasley, Southern California based artist Bret Price and Gerard Tsutakawa of the Pacific Northwest, will present work. A public reception will be held on Thursday, June 19th from 5:30-7:30pm.

Abstract sculpture has remained the most vibrant part of public contemporary art for most of the last century. Through a strong visual dialogue primarily pertaining to monumental public sculpture, this interest by working artists and viewers has not waned since its incarnation. Through distinctly different means, Beasley, Meadmore, Price and Tsutakawa remain true to a modernist abstract tradition that is an inherent part of our visual landscape.

Clement Meadmore, (1929-2005) was an Australian-American sculptor known for massive outdoor steel and aluminum sculptures. Meadmore used cor-ten steel, aluminum, and occasionally bronze to create colossal outdoor sculptures which combine the elements of abstract expressionism and minimalism.

Bruce Beasley, (b.1939) is one of the most prominent living Bay Area sculptors. Beasley's large-scale geometric pieces articulate a powerful visual language that has won the artist critical acclaim and sustained a career that has spanned over four decades.

Bret Price, (b.1950), is recognized for his large-scale industrial steel sculptures where enormous I-beams appear to bend and curve like rubber or ribbon. Using heating chambers, Price applies concentrated, intense heat to manipulate the steel to create a sense of fluidity and an illusion of flexibility.

Gerard Tsutakawa, (b.1947), is a 3rd generation Japanese American and widely respected Seattle-based sculptor. His work retains its ties to the Japanese tradition with the simplistic organic forms he employs.
