The Mills College Dance Department presents the 2011 MFA Thesis Concert:ļ¾ Smoke and Mirrors. This event includes works by eight choreographers who have been actively exploring and cultivating their unique artistic voices over the course of the two year program. The 2011 MFA candidates include Abbie Ackerman, Kristine Anderson, Lacey Carter, Jasmine Donaldson, Mary Grimes, Jochelle Elise Perena, Ashley Trottier and Nzinga Woods. These dance artists bring their diverse backgrounds and interests to the forefront of their work. From Contemporary Dance to hints of Butoh to eclectic styles within the African Diaspora, the concert features a wide stylistic range.
As one of the longest running dance departments, founded in 1938, Mills prides itself on imparting its legacy of innovative thinking to its students. With deeply rooted history at it's core, Mills develops dancers technically as well as artistically, providing a theoretical base to support the student's explorations. This concert is the culmination of the candidate's period of research and creation. Local and national choreographers have graduated from this program with the foundation and tools to be active artists in today's dance culture. This year is no exception.
Free matinee on Saturday, April 23rd at 2pm is part of Bay Area National Dance Week.
