Some argue that metaphysics is 'dead' (though it has to be said, there seem to be a lot of metaphysicians doing lunches!); others argue that rumours of its demise are much exaggerated. Some argue that we have forgotten metaphysics (or that we have failed to remember it, at crucial times, recently); others argue that we are, in essence, metaphysical beings; or that being metaphysical is a fundamental part of what it means to be human. Whatever one thinks, the (physical, at least) evidence suggests that metaphysics is very much a part of how we think about many important things today: the universe; life; mortality; meaning (and meaninglessness); identity; consciousness; love; friendship; and so on. Join us in this fully illustrated day to see how profound and thought-provoking metaphysics can be, and the extent to which it defines us as reflective, thinking beings.
