What does modern science tell us about reality? To what extent is the scientific picture of the world consistent with the picture that one might find in much modern metaphysics? Are we better equipped today to distinguish between reality and illusion or are we still in the sorts of (Neo-platonic) caves represented memorably in 'The Matrix', 'Wag the Dog' or 'The Truman Show', among others? Is reality fundamentally as it seems or is it elusive, uncertain or indeterminate, or perhaps, holographic in nature, as some theoretical physicists seem to believe? And what of virtual reality? Is it reality at all, or yet another kind of cavernous enclosure, so to speak? We shall explore these and related questions in this fully illustrated day course.
