Mendocino Stories & Music Series happily hosts a Halloween Costume Dance featuring The “Safe Sax” Swing Septet at a special time - 8:30PM - on Saturday, October 29. Four saxes, three rhythm, all swingin’ gives the band a light, but hard swinging sound, perfect for dancing and listening. Come over to the Hill House Inn of Mendocino for a good time.
The current edition of “Safe Sax” features some of the north coast’s finest Jazz musicians. Band leader Karl Schoen plays baritone sax and flute, and has been with “Safe Sax” since its inception. Karl also leads his own trio and quartet, and gigs around Northern California with the seven-piece Salsa band, “Mambo This”. Lead saxophonist Dave Slollin plays alto and tenor sax.
Erica Zissa on alto and tenor sax. She is a recent graduate of the Humboldt State University music department. Erica also plays lead alto with the Boonville Big Band. She holds the distinction of being second generation Safe Sax as her mother, Diane Zissa, played in Safe Sax in the band’s early days. Newest member of the band is Jean Whipple on tenor sax. Just new in town all the way from Alaska, she has university training with a blues background. Jean played in Gloriana production this year.
The rhythm section features the propulsive sound of guitarist and band arranger David Brown. Born and raised in New Orleans, David is known as the person who never met an instrument he couldn’t play. Joining David are Laura Maione, consummate jazz bassist and veteran jazz player Tom Rickard on drums..
