Mendocino Stories and Music Series will host Cynthia Hogue, along with readers Theresa Whitehill, Lee Edmundson, and Devreaux Baker on Saturday, April 16 at the Mendocino Hotel. They will read from Cynthia’s book of interview poems drawn from actual words of Hurricane Katrina evacuees. New Orleans style jazz with Ron Nadeau will start at 7:00PM, readings at 7:30PM.
In her book When the Water Came: Evacuees of Hurricane Katrina (2010), Cynthia Hogue gathers the intimate recollections of 11 Louisiana and Mississippi residents and the unforgettable details of their lives during and after Hurricane Katrina. Their words, transformed by the poet's hand into witness poems are heartbreaking, but also full or irony and fortitude, and are ultimately inspiring stories of the human condition.
Lee Edmundsen has participated in scores of theatrical presentations on the north coast since 1980. Theresa Whitehill, well known to local poetry audiences, was selected to serve as Poet Laureate for the city of Ukiah in 2009, a two-year term. 2010 Pushcart Prize nominee Devreaux Baker has placed poetry in dozens of journals and anthologies.
All Ages Welcome! Doors open at 6:30 PM for bistro menu and drinks. 707-937-1732 or www.mendocinostories.com/events.
