Mixed media artwork by 20 accomplished artists is being showcased as part of the Mendocino Art Center's Artists in Residence exhibit, "Mendonesian AIR," April 2 through April 26, in the Main and Nichols galleries. The eagerly anticipated annual showing features a wide spectrum of new works created by the artists during their residencies at the Art Center. Included will be fine arts, ceramics, fiber arts and sculpture. Curators for the exhibit are Erica Benotti, Ryan Hurst and Gert Rasmussen.
The resident artists come to Mendocino bringing with them a variety of perspectives from diverse backgrounds. The residency program provides the time for the individual artist to investigate ideas and develop new work. The interaction between the residents provides a forum in which artistic techniques and ideas are shared and exchanged. One- to six-month residencies are available for the working artists and craftsperson, emerging or established, in ceramics, digital arts, fiber arts, fine art, jewelry and sculpture. The residency application process is competitive and artists are evaluated and selected on the strength of the application and work samples.
This year the Mendocino Art Center has hosted artists from across the country, including Arizona, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee and Wisconsin, as well as from Canada.
Trio from Three Rivers
Also on exhibit during April is "Trio from Three Rivers," an Abramson Gallery showing of Karen Bowers' watercolors, Rita Crane's photography, and Laura Rose's pastels. The three artists are part of a collective of ten artists that live and have studios along the watersheds of three rivers – Little River, Albion River, Navarro River.
