Meklit Hadero
With special Guest Quinn Deveaux
Thurs, May 3: 7:30pm
Meklit Hadero’s star continues to rise. This talented singer-songwriter based in the Bay area is an extraordinarily accomplished writer with a unique voice, demonstrates exceptional grace and charm, and actively pursues a socially and politically committed agenda.
Since its release, her first cd "On a Day Like This" has been a favorite with critics and media and continues to garner interest with a piece on PBS (also carried on salon.com) last August, a new "featured artist" slot on Google Music, a full feature on PRI last August , and YouTube Music Pick in Sept.
She's a TED Senior Fellow, and as such will be developing over the next 2 years an immense musical journey down several of the countries of the Nile Treaty in her Nile Project . She'll have access to TED Talks twice a year with her project: a platform that gets an
average of 5,000,000 hits per talk ...She has a hip hop album in collaboration with 2 prominent emcees coming out in April known as Copperwire, and another of duet covers of indie rock hits around the same time (see videos on website, for an a cappella preview of "Tunnels" by Arcade Fire)...
She's constantly busy between touring, recording, and planning the Nile Project. Her gigs range from San Francisco’s classic rock club The Independent to a month-long artist residency at NYU while curating weekly shows at Lincoln Center's Atrium; she was a Bumberpick (along with Mavis Staples ) at Bumbershoot in Sept. where she KILLED it ...Seattle was the last stop on a West Coast 10 day tour ; she played indie clubs and even the small crowds came away swearing they'd seen the best show of their lives - as did the bookers . She also did sellout shows in Davis, Arcata and in Grass Valley CA for young , hip audiences who were blown away. In October she did a 5 day residency at the International Ringling Festival in Sarasota FL(curated by Baryshnikov himself) and Misha liked her so much he insisted on presenting her at the Baryshnikov Performing Arts Center in NYC, which she did at the end of a 10 day northeast US/Canada tour where she also performed at the Lane series in VT, and under the auspices of Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique Festival.
A sheer joy to experience, she is a rising star worldwide and joins us tonight with her band featuring Darrell Green on drums, Darren Johnston on trumpet*
