The need to encourage positive self-image in young people has never been more pressing. In response to that need, through her book Thin Club, author Kim Tennant offers educators, parents and young people the perfect literary tool—a story for generating a discussion centered on building a positive self-image.
Thin Club's main character, Mandy, “has the perfect life and is the perfect student; now she wants to have the perfect body and to be beautiful, thin and graceful like the models and movie stars she sees in magazines and on television. One day, when her friends tell her she looks fat in a new dress, she decides to diet just like everyone else."
Thin Club is written from the point of view of an eleven-year old girl. The subject is the proverbial "elephant in the living room"; namely, our society's blatant reinforcement that girls and women, to achieve success, must conform to an idealized image of beauty. What few realize, even beyond the destructive effect these messages have, is that clever camera tricks and electronically re-touched photos "slenderize" all the beautiful women young girls are told they should look like.
During a one-day free event, educators and community members will have an opportunity to speak with Kim Tennant and learn more about Thin Club. Books will be available for review and purchase at the event.
