Prince George’s County comes to life in these new photographic history books by Nathania A. Branch Miles & Jane Taylor Thomas. Through 200 vintage photographs, Oxon Hill documents the city’s history named for the majestic 17th-century manor that was once home to the nephews of George Washington and John Hanson. This volume features notable sites and stresses the importance of Oxon Hill’s proximity to the Potomac River and our nation’s capital.
In 1809, Gen. George Washington directed the construction of Fort Washington on the Potomac River to protect Washington from the British. Fort Warburton, as it was originally known, became a strong community, thriving on diversity, economic growth and its close proximity to the nation’s capital.
As the community grows and flourishes, it is vital for residents to remember the area’s heritage and the people who paved the way for prosperity. Miles and Thomas have carefully gathered images from archival sources and private collections. Nathania Branch Miles and Jane Taylor Thomas are Prince George’s County residents active in genealogy and preservation groups.
Sponsored by the Prince George's County Memorial Library System. This event is free and open to the public.
