In celebration of Day of the Dead, Oceanside High School graduate and artist Daniel F. Martinez will install a mixture of paintings, fabrications and marionettes in the Parker Gallery at Oceanside Museum of Art. Cafe con Muertos (Coffee with Death) comments on the artist’s ritualistic practice of drinking coffee before he creates or teaches art and fuses this with his devout observance of El Dias De Los Muertos. His work is strongly influenced by the indigenous cultures of Mexico reflecting his ancestry, familial traditions, and native art. In this collection of El Dias De Los Muertos he introduces ancient traditions of this Mexican observance, adding satire, historical fact, and social commentary. Café con Muertos will be on view in the Parker Gallery October 8 through November 1, 2009. “Meet the Artist” Daniel F. Martinez on Saturday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. Martinez will discuss the history and meaning behind his El Dias De Los Muertos collection and display images of his cultural public art projects. “Meet the Artist” is free with museum admission and complimentary for members of Oceanside Museum of Art as a benefit of membership.
General admission is $8, seniors 65 and over $5, students and active military free.
