The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is proud to present a lecture featuring legendary revolutionary figure Xu Jiatun.
Xu Jiatun was born in 1916 in Libao, a small town in Jiangsu Province. He joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1938. Not long after Japanese invaded North China in 1937, Xu threw himself into the resistance movement against the invaders. During the Chinese civil war in the late 1940s, he was the political commissar of the 87th Division of the People’s Liberation Army. He was repeatedly promoted to higher positions over the years. During the Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s, Mr. Xu was attacked and knocked down by the Red Guards. In 1983, Xu was picked and sent to the then British-occupied Hong Kong by Deng Xiaoping, to be in charge of all the CCP’s forces in that colony. There, he held the title of director at the Xinhua News Agency Branch. During the 1989 Tiananmen Square event, Xu was criticized by the top level of the CCP for his sympathy for the pro-democratic movement. Threatened with serious disciplinary action, Xu decided to leave China. He arrived in Los Angeles in May 1990. The 94-year-old legendary revolutionary presently lives in San Bernardino County, California.
The presentation will be in Chinese and English and will be held in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension building at 328 J Street on Saturday, December 4th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Following the lecture, refreshments will be served at the reception held in the Chuang Garden at 404 Third Avenue. Admission is $2 and free for members and children under 12.
