Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. (PVI) and Meals on Wheels organizations from seven Bay Area counties will be joined by partner restaurants for the second annual Bay Area Dine Out for Meals on Wheels on October 4. Serving eight cities in southern San Mateo County, Peninsula Volunteers prepares and delivers over 150,000 meals a year. The seven combined Bay Area Meals on Wheels organizations currently provide 3 million meals each year to over 9,000 seniors in need of a hot, nutritious meal, wellness check, and companionship each day.
Participating restaurants in San Mateo County will donate a portion of the day's proceeds to PVI's Meals on Wheels program on October 4. In addition, diners have the opportunity to make donations at each restaurant that will go directly to PVI's Meals on Wheels Program. The recent recession plus state and local budget cuts have caused a dramatic contraction in the safety net of health care and in-home support services for low income seniors. As the safety net shrinks, Meals on Wheels programs receive more requests for services already strained by the needs of a growing, aging community. 68% of the Meals on Wheels clients live on an income of $1,000 or less per month.
Meals on Wheels services fill in when home-bound elders have no other alternative. When in-home care is delayed or stopped, when transportation to eliminated, when neighbors move away, when discharges patients need support in the home, Meals on Wheels fills gaps and provides an essential life-line. The annual Dine Out offers a new way to assist Meals on Wheels address the increasing demand for services coupled with the rising costs of food and gas.
