Florence Bean James Lives! Florence (1892-1988) co-founded and led the legendary Seattle Repertory Playhouse (1929-1950) housed in the present-day Jones Playhouse and was a political activist, gifted speaker, and inspiration for countless theatre artists and audiences in Seattle. She and others were targeted by the infamous anti-communist Canwell Committee in 1948. They defied the committee andwere prosecuted for contempt of the legislature. As a result they lost their audience base and the SRP came to an end.In her mid-fifties she emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada where she again became a major theatre teacher, director, and administrator for the Province. One of those whose lives she changed was a young actress, Rita Deverell, now a distinguished professor in Canada. Ms. Deverell has written a riveting play about their professional and political relationship.Outspoken and fearless to the end, Ms. James set an example for countless others.
