This unique double bill features two of Mali’s legendary guitar players. Affectionately called ‘Kar Kar,’ Boubacar Traoré is one of the great veteran exponents of African blues. With a long and sometimes painful history, he's still in impressive form, matching his thoughtful, soulful voice with an acoustic guitar style that mixes blues riffs with West African influences. His easygoing, gently rhythmic playing is backed by a trio of n'goni, calabash and balafon. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Sidi Touré is one of the best among the Songhaï bluesmen and is often said to be a worthy successor to Ali Farka Touré. His lyrics and guitar style are full of reflection, hope and promise, often calling for social change.
Free lecture/demonstration with Boubacar Traoré: Wednesday, October 5, 1–2:30pm, at New England Conservatory, Pierce Hall, 241 St. Botolph St., Boston.
