Murray will be exploring ways in which a rhythm section can creatively augment a jazz performance beyond the typical function of simply marking harmony, tonic bass function and rhythmic pulse. He will be discussing both how the rhythm section can more effectively play together as a unit, and also how it can best support the rest of the ensemble. Topics include dynamics, time/tempo, timbre, bass lines, harmonic density, syncopation, increased interplay, and the use joint harmonic and rhythmic figures. Along the way, he will show a number of grooves from a variety of music styles that you can use in your group.
Vocalists and horn players are welcome, as they will learn ways in which the rhythm section can more effectively accompany them. Jazz composers will gain new ideas on how to use the rhythm section to create more exciting, innovative arrangements.
