The triumph was of profound importance in Roman culture and has been to monarchs, dynasts and generals ever since. In The Roman Triumph (Harvard), Mary Beard asks what are its implications as a celebration of imperialism and military might, for questions about military power and “victory” in our own times. She will focus on the ceremonial aspect of the triumph and piece together its elusive traces in art and literature in a discussion with Christopher Clark, Reader in Modern History at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, and author of Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia 1600 – 1947.
