Martin Wattenberg's work centers on the theme of mapping the invisible. He
is known for his information-based digital artwork as well as for his
scientific and applied work in the field of information visualization.
Past projects include include visualizations of music (Shape of Song), the
stock market (SmartMoney's Map of the Market), baby names (NameVoyager),
language (Color Code), authorship (HistoryFlow, with Fernanda Viegas),
internet art (The Whitney Museum's Idea Line), and chess-playing artificial
intelligence (Thinking Machine). A series of collaborations with Marek
Walczak (Apartment, Third Person, WonderWalker) explore relationships
between space and memory.
Wattenberg's work has been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the
London Institute of Contemporary Arts, Ars Electronica, and other venues
worldwide. Wattenberg leads the Visual Communication Lab at IBM Research,
where he explores visualization techniques that help people see and exchange
information in novel ways. He holds a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley,
and recently received a grant from the Creative Capital Foundation.
