Author Mark Twain is best known to most people for his literary works "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" & "Tom Sawyer". But during his travels throughout the Old West, he became an adored guest and public speaker to towns throughout California, making himself part of the history of the Gold Rush.

After a 4 ½ year hiatus.(rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated) Mr. Twain continues his journey throughout the regions of Northern California. Recently enjoying enthusiastic houses in neighboring Nevada City, he is scheduled to lecture at the Yuba Theatre in historic downtown Downieville Saturday afternoon June 21st. Topics will include his boyhood days in Hannibal, his participation in a confederate militia and his adventures out west. Twain will once again allure audiences with his sophisticated anecdotes and virtuous philosophies. The Sierra County Arts Council in collaboration with LeGacy Productions is proud to add Mr. Twain’s lecture into the activities scheduled for Downieville’s "Gold Rush Days" celebration on June 21st.

Veteran stage actor Chris LeGate has compiled together Twain’s more popular essays and sketches into a ninety minute portrait of this American icon. He began performing in 1994 at the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley, entertaining brunch guests for eight years. He has continued to study and analyze the works of this important part of America’s history as well as extend his performance to other venues. LeGate has brought his re-creation to audiences throughout California in elementary schools, bed and breakfasts, convalescent hospitals, a number of theaters throughout Northern California and other venues. LeGate is pleased to return to the Yuba Theatre, having last lectured there in 1998.
