Mark Miner leads a Halloween reading of "Beowulf: The Fight with Grendel."
Enjoy your favorite creepy story on Halloween night in the comfort of Wordsmiths Books. "Hey, I could be out partying on Halloween night; will this be any fun?" YES! Audience participation is expected. Mark Miner will recite the original Beowulf in poetic, alliterative Old English. Since Old English is no more intelligible than German to modern ears, a Modern English translation will be offered--by the audience--on a potluck basis! YOU bring your own Modern English text, and at 6:30 p.m., we will figure out WHO get to read WHICH section in translation. Each person takes responsibility for about 50-100 lines. Modern English and Old English will alternate every 10-20 lines. We will have a few Mondern English copies to read from in case you don't have a copy. Experienced thespians and beginning students of story-telling are welcome to have a go. Costumes are welcome, particularly those on Agnlo-Saxon themes! The show is free, so come join us at Wordsmiths for a fun and scary Halloween evening.
