The Atascadero Historical Society will host an art reception in its museum, 6600 Lewis Ave., Atascadero, on Friday, Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and feature the local art collected by the late Marj Mackey.
Mackey majored in art in high school in Lewistown, Mont. While she was a librarian and later on the first Atascadero City Council and served as Atascadero’s first female mayor in 1984 and then again in 1986.
The show will include work by Mackey, George Asdel, Thom Goff, Ewald Berndt, Marion Hart, V Pascal, Marrilyn Miner, N. Volny, Marion Hart and Zene Murphy.
One piece, “Late Afternoon on Morro Rock,” was painted expressly for Mackey by Goff. The Goff paintings are signed on the back as well as the front. Mackey, her granddaughter said, loved to support local artists, many of whom she was friends with, and nearly all of her art collection was by local artists.
Mackey passed away on May 22 at the age of 88.
The art reception is a part of the Atascadero Art & Wine Tour, taking place on Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The city’s treelighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in Sunken Gardens.
