Polvo's February show includes the work of Maria Gaspar. For this show she will create work incorporating video, installation and 2D. Maria's conceptual work reflects socio-cultural themes that deal with feminism, identity and display. It examines women?s roles, particularly within the Latino community and examines its impact on generations of women seeking to find a sense of place. Her work seeks to find this place as a place of empowerment, ritual and transformation. Maria will create a space that takes ownership of traditional symbols, experiences and representations, along with their existing complexities, and recreate them with contemporary meanings.

Maria Gaspar received her B.F.A. from New York City?s Pratt Institute and currently resides in Chicago. She is a public artist for the Chicago Public Art Group and recently finished leading a Mosaic Mural Project at the Garfield Park Conservatory and Marwen Foundation. At this time, she is developing arts programs for the Little Village Community and teaches as an Artist-Resident for a variety of arts organizations, including Urban Gateways, Marwen Foundation and Pros Arts Studio. She is on the Ilinois Arts Council Roster and teaches in many CPS Schools. She recently exhibited her work as part of the Pilsen Open Studios Event and has an upcoming ?Artists Connects? lecture at the Art Institute of Chicago in March.
