Maria di Rohan is one of the most astonishing products of Donizetti's last years in the theater, when his art progressed by leaps and bounds just as a fatal illness was about to overtake him. It may be his most modern opera: a taut, intimate drama of affection and violence that prefigures the world of Un ballo in maschera, Eugene Onegin and Werther.
