via UC-SC-Extension (3525-039) two-day workshop in formal and informal portraiture

"In this workshop we will study and discuss varying styles of photographing people. We will familiarize ourselves with the approaches of the greatest people photographers, including Julia Margaret Cameron, Paul Strand, W. Eugene Smith, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Arnold Newman, Irving Penn and others. An in-depth consideration of the difference in their approaches will lead us to identify our own unique and preferred ways of photographing. Working outside with natural light, we will explore portraiture by practicing with each other. We will also spend time on exercises that help dispel the relative discomfort of photographing strangers when doing street photography. Some may prefer formal portraiture while others may work in a candid "street" photography style. Participants will have an opportunity to explore both ways of working. There will also be discussions of the ethical issues of people photography. We will not be covering studio lighting."

This workshop requires pre-registration
