Everybody's Children (2008, 51 min)
They arrive in Canada underaged and alone, often traumatized and seeking asylum in a country completely alien to their own. Surprisingly, some provinces have no government program in place to care for these unaccompanied minors. This documentary is a cinematic portrait of a year in the life of two such teenagers, Joyce and Sallieu. Sallieu witnessed the murder of his mother as a young boy in war-torn Sierra Leone, and vibrant Joyce, 17, left the Democratic Republic of Congo to avoid being forced into prostitution by her family.
Sultana Assar, Resettlement and Integration Services Coordinator, Calgary Catholic Immigration Services (CCIS). In various rolls with CCIS since 1993, Sultana has facilitated all aspects of resettlement and integration of clients and the challenges that they bring. In 2001 she was among the 8 recipients of the First Jerry Sellinger Award, given to frontline workers who work with domestic violence cases. Sultana and CCIS as a whole have a vision to build a community where immigrants and refugees become contributing members of the Canadian society.
