Manring, Kassin and Darter return to 142 with another concert of superior musicianship. Performing “improvised chamber music for the new millennium,” Manring, Kassin and Darter has been astounding audiences for the last 12 years with amazing chops, quiet soul, diverse compositions, and a somewhat twisted sense of humor. Referred to by some music critics as “the world's most sophisticated jam-band,” the group features three top virtuosos on their respective instruments.
This summer they released their second CD, “Riverrun,” a 2-disc, live recording done at the acoustically ideal Noe Valley Ministry in San Francisco. Featuring all original music (with the exception of a baroque piece written by François Couperin in 1716), the compositions range from Brazilian, funk, rock, 12-tone bebop (a Darter piece entitled Paleontology), “Bartok-jazz,” and thrash to Tango, Calypso, tripped-out sci-fi stride piano (Darter’s Eubie Blake on Mars), Balinese Gamelan, jazz, and many other influences.
