John Chodes will speak on the Lancaster System of education, which was the world's largest private school system that thrived in England and the United States from the 1790s through the 1850s. It was a franchise system set up by Joseph Lancaster. There were ultimately 98 Lancaster Schools in New York City alone before they were taken over by the state and regulated by the Board of Education.
