John O'Hara is the second New Yorker ever to be tried and convicted for the crime of voting once in an election. The first was Susan B. Anthony. O'Hara committed the supposed crime of registering and voting from his girlfriend's address, where he was living at the time, instead of his "permanent residence." In reality, his real crime was having the temerity to field candidates for election against the Brooklyn Democratic political machine. After three trials (triple jeopardy) and nine appeals, O'Hara was convicted of a felony, fined $20,000, sentenced to 1,500 hours of community service, and disbarred as an attorney. (Meanwhile, the political boss and long-time district attorney who convicted him, Charles Hynes, is registered to vote from the Brooklyn Municipal Building.)
