The historic Portola District is one of those secret neighborhoods of San Francisco – “a city within a city”. First established in 1869, it became a community of nurserymen who grew much of the City’s flower crop; some of the greenhouses and original homes still exist. In the 1920s, Maltese immigrants came to the Portola and developed bustling mercantiles on “The Road” (aka: San Bruno Avenue); at one time “The Road” was home to the Maltese Consulate. Many of the original settlers’ families still live here and continue to celebrate their Maltese lineage and American legacy.
