In late 1943, Mala Zimetbaum met Edek Galinski, a striking 22-year old Polish soldier and fellow prisoner at Auschwitz. Despite the utterly dehumanizing conditions of the camp, Mala and Edek fell in love. Later they escape with the help of their loyal and sometimes colorful friends. Mala's defiant and heroic gesture of preserving her humanity in the face of execution continues to inspire hope in the hearts of many.
