English Solo Play by Jaimini Pathak.
Mahadev Desai was Mahatma Gandhi's secretary from 1917 till his death in 1942. A prolific writer and translator, Desai maintained a diary where he meticulously recorded Gandhi's correspondence as well as conversations. The diaries, which run to eight volumes, are a perfect example of the merging of the personal and the public, the mundane and the momentous.
Ramu Ramanathan has used the diaries as a source for his play Mahadevbhai (1892-1942). The play is a monologue by the incredibly talented Jaimini Pathak. The tone is deliberately kept informal and chatty thus making the freedom struggle and the men who led it accessible. There is the feeling that they are one of us.
