In person: members of the East Van Porn Collective
From the farthest anarcho-feminist frontiers of deepest, darkest East Vancouver comes an intriguing new documentary (or something very much like a documentary) about a group of free-thinking, politically-inclined friends, straight and gay, who formed a collective to make their own pornography ? and discovered that the dynamics of collective decision-making are even more complex when they involve issues of the most intimate exposure. The members of the East Van Porn Collective first started getting together, book-club style, to watch and critique porn films and sexy mainstream movies. Finding that none of that stuff was really turning them on, they came to the conclusion that, if they were ever going to see the kind of porn they really wanted to see, they would have to take matters into their own hands. Thus began their Do-It-Yourself odyssey into erotic filmmaking. Made in Secret captures the collective during the production of Bike Sexual, their latest pansexual romp, and chronicles the complications that arise when one group member proposes an exception to one of the collective's cardinal rules: that their homemade porn be screened only amongst themselves and never to outsiders. Complicating things further is a sly postmodern twist: it seems the friends decided, first, to make a documentary about their anarcho-feminist porn-making collective, and then, because no such collective actually existed, to form one. In other words, they became the East Van Porn Collective in order to make Made in Secret. Members of the EVPC will be present at each screening to discuss their witty, engaging film and answer your, um, penetrating questions. Colour, DVD. 86 mins.
