Macy Gray's hit single, 'I Try,' introduced listeners to a different kind of female voice -- carefree, deep and somewhat raspy but beautiful nonetheless. Emerging from London's Acid Jazz scene in the late eighties, Brand New Heavies debut on record came in 1991; mixing soulful instrumentals and funk driven rhythms into a sonic brew, topped with vocalist N'Dia Davenport's contributions.
