Known for her sultry caramel vocals and electric live performance, chanteuse Lura brings an urban sensuality to Cape Verde’s musical tradition, first made famous by Cesaria Evora. Lura mixes the familiar morna style with the little known rhythms of funana and batuque, and is backed by a dazzling five-piece band whose members demonstrate all manner of indigenous instruments and rhythms.
Though his music is known for its decidedly twenty-first century feel, Cantuária’s sound might best be described as ‘post-electronica acoustic’ – a flawless blend of jazz and the percussive sounds of Brazil. His repertoire includes songs by Jobim and Gilberto Gil, as well as Cantuária’s own compositions. Cantuária has collaborated with diverse musical stars, including Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Bill Frisell, and Arto Lindsay.
