Lunch & Learn—with Edgar J. L’Heureux-“From Pencils to Floating Logs, the History of Florida’s Timber Industry” May 8, 2012

Did you know that Florida has more native trees than any other state in the mainland U.S.? With more than 16 million acres of forest, about half of the state’s land area is covered with trees. Learn about the rise and fall of one of Florida’s earliest major industries while you explore some of the first lumber mills, learn the role of Cedar Keys in early pencil production, and find out what floating logs were used for. From its beginnings to its eventual decline, discover the history of this once-thriving and little-known industry. Ed L’Heureux, a Floridian and graduate of Stetson University, has published 12 books and travels the state lecturing on various topics in Florida history. He is the owner of Sabal Palm Press, which publishes Sabal Palm Review, a literary magazine that showcases the work of emerging writers. Members free; non-members $3.
