Luna Negra Dance Theater launches its 2011-2012 season with ¡Mujeres!, a celebration of globally influential Latinas that also highlights Hispanic Heritage Month. The program features two World Premieres by guest choreographer Asun Noales and Luna Negra Artistic Director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, along with the return of Paloma Querida by former company member Michelle Manzanales. Luna Negra performs ¡Mujeres! in one performance only at the Harris Theater, 205 E. Randolph Drive, on Saturday, October 1 at 6:30 pm.
The ¡Mujeres! program also features the World Premiere of Not Everything by Luna Negra Artistic Director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano based on a single print by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, renowned for her politically charged black and white images of contemporary indigenous Mexican life. Also a full company work, Not Everything is set to the music of Für Lennart in Memoriam (For String Orchestra) by Arvo Pärt and features scenic construction by Jared B. Moore and costume design by Luna Negra’s own Diego Tortelli.
Rounding out the program will be the return of Paloma Querida (Beloved Dove) by Michelle Manzanales, originally premiered by Luna Negra in 2010. Inspired by the work of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Manzanales’ work is an interpretation of Kahlo’s personal and artistic essence as expressed through her self-portraits.
Tickets are now on sale and range in price from $25 to $65. Performance-only tickets are available by calling The Harris Theater box office at 312-334-7777 or online at www.harristheaterchicago.org.
