'Luminist Horizons: The Art and Collection of James A. Suydam' juxtaposes works by Suydam with the creations of other luminist painters in his circle who were working during the Civil War era, including John F. Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford and Frederic Edwin Church. Considered an offshoot of the Hudson River School, luminism was concerned with the varying effects of light and atmosphere in the natural landscape while minimizing the appearance of brushstrokes. 'Luminist Horizons' features over 55 exceptionally beautiful works reflecting an important period in American history and culture.
