Friendly Valley, the debut album by the Lucky Old Sons, will be released on Thursday, December 3, 2009. The record will be available at Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, through iTunes and locally via Vintage Vinyl and Euclid Records. The band will also be hosting a release party on the 3rd at Riddles in University City, Missouri.
The self-released record features ten original songs written by pianist Matt Davis, and was recorded locally at Smith Lee Studios with producer John Katsafanas. The rockabilly-influenced band strives for a vintage sound using minimalist recording techniques. According to Davis, “to keep things as authentic as possible, we recorded the majority of the record live, in one room, in only two days. It’s amazing how much you can do with just a handful of microphones in the right room."
On December 3rd, the band will host a hometown release party at Riddles Penultimate in University City’s historic Delmar Loop district. At the party, attendees will be able to purchase the CD and hear the band perform the new record in its entirety. A number of musical guests are expected to perform with the band as well. Heavily influenced by the piano-driven sounds of icons such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and Fats Domino, the Lucky Old Sons combine classic rock-n-roll with a modern, often tongue-in-cheek rockabilly sound. The debut album features upbeat barnburner tunes such as “Strawberry” and “Orange Pickin’ Time” alongside ballads like “Grand Avenue” and “Just for Fun”. The band even delves into classic country-and- western with the title track, “Friendly Valley,” and the hilarious, “A.F.M.”
The Lucky Old Sons features members of the award-winning St. Louis bands, Phat noiZ and FolkNBluesgrass. Matt Davis plays piano, Frank Bauer is on saxophone, Corey “Woody” Woodruff handles drumming duties, and Steve Bauer plays electric mandolin. The band is known for their entertaining live shows and performs throughout the Midwest.
